Edwards Small Mortuary announces with our deepest sympathy the passing of Herman Mathis, Jr. on March 10, 2025. Our sincere condolences to the family and friends.
Mr. Herman Mathis, Jr. was born on September 12, 1950, to Alice Ruth and Herman Mathis, Sr. He graduated from Ballard Hudson High School in 1968 and cherished his time as an alumnus of the Upward Bound Program, holding many fond memories of his Upward Bound family. A passionate supporter of the Peach County Trojans Football team, Herman faithfully attended all the games until his health began to decline. In 2023, he retired from his role as a machinist at LH Thomson.
Herman was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on July 5, 1986. He served as an Elder in the Fort Valley Congregation, fulfilling various roles as a spiritual shepherd and teacher. Additionally, he volunteered his time on Local Design and Construction projects, where he contributed to the installation and finishing of drywall. More recently, Herman took the lead in overseeing food service for the Theocratic Schools and Construction projects, managing menu planning, coordinating the cooks and servers, and ensuring the delivery of nutritious meals.
On June 29, 1974, Herman married Idella Sanders, and together they had two children, Tene’ and Tiffany, who were truly his pride and joy, and affectionately known as "Daddy's Girls."
Herman had a vibrant personality that made him loved by all who knew him. A deeply spiritual man, he was a source of inspiration to many, and his absence will be felt forever.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Herman Mathis, Sr., and his brother, Travis Mathis.
Herman is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, Idella Mathis; his cherished daughters: Tene’ (James) Everett and Tiffany (Nesha) Mathis-Thomas; a son he raised as his own, Terry Sanders; two brothers: Timothy (Brenda) Mathis and Reverend Ronnie (Sabrina) Jackson; as well as a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is also survived by his beloved grand-pups: Princess, Apollo, Hunter, and Jaxon.
