Mary Lucille Lomax

Mary Lucille Lomax was born in Brunswick, Georgia on December 22, 1933 to Georgia Santy and Thomas Campbell and on September 6, 2026, she departed this life to her celestial home. She completed her high school education at Risley High School in Brunswick Georgia, where she met her husband of over 60 years, and moved with a young family to join the Fort Valley State College community. Soon after moving to Fort Valley, she enrolled in classes, eager to pursue her bachelor’s degree. Mary, also lovingly called Lucille, graduated with honors in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Education degree. During this season of life, she began a career utilizing her secretarial skills while her children were enrolled in Peach County elementary schools.

While raising a family and supporting the aspirations of her husband, she earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. In the process, she modeled grit, determination and grace for her three children. She was given the opportunity to advance her career at Fort Valley State, using her considerable administrative and leadership skills as the Director of Procurement. During her tenure of more than 40 years, she served in multiple capacities at the university and did so with commitment and joy.

In 1966, while matriculating at Fort Valley State University, she joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. Focused on academic excellence, sisterhood, and supporting women and girls, she worked alongside sorority sisters in support of the motto “Service to all Mankind”.

For many years, she was an active member of The Links, Incorporated, a national service organization. Upon retirement from active participation, she received an honorary award for 20 years of outstanding service to the Links, one of the nation’s oldest and largest organizations of extraordinary women who are “committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry.” The core values of friendship, integrity, honesty, and family resonated with her and reflected her values as well.

As a member of the Georgia Retired Educators Association, Lucille was honored with the Emeritus designation, having contributed faithfully and with passion. Along with her husband, she also served as a member of the Kiwanis Club of Fort Valley. For more than a decade, she participated with distinction and joy, identifying needs in the local community and mobilizing to meet those needs. She was generous with any and all of her resources, including her time and energy, and truly embraced the scripture,” it is more blessed to give than to receive”. Kay School was a particular source of joy for her, and she was committed to improving the lives of others, especially those with physical or cognitive differences. She offered volunteer service to many organizations, including St. Luke’s Episcopal church, and did so with love and gratitude.

From humble beginnings, she treated all people with dignity and respect. She maintained a curiosity about politics and about the ways of life and conditions of those beyond our borders. She thoroughly enjoyed learning from new people, whether from around the corner or across the globe. As such, she travelled extensively with her family, enjoying travels to New Zealand, Italy, France, Germany, Greece, and Bermuda, cultivating relationships with many along the way.

Lucille was preceded in death by her adoring husband, Leon Johnson Lomax and her beloved son, Lionel Smythe Lomax. She is survived by two loving daughters, Linda Victoria Brown (Robert Brown, Esq.) and Laraine Lomax Kvitek, Ph. D. and has five treasured grandchildren, Troy Brown (Shay Brown, Esq.), Talon Brown, Esq., Victoria Kvitek, Christiana Kvitek and Chiara Kvitek. By God’s grace, she also enjoyed a delightful great grandchild, Capri Brown, along with numerous other family members and friends.
