Edwards Small Mortuary announces with our deepest sympathy the passing of Vernon Renwick Oates on April 17, 2025. Our sincere condolences to the family and friends.

Vernon Oates, a beloved resident of Orange Park, Florida, was born on April 8, 1964, in Fort Valley, Georgia, and grew up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was the cherished son of Virginia Lyons and Johnny Oates.

Vernon received his education from the Peach County School System and later attended Fort Valley State University. It was there that he met his future wife, Carla Oates, whom he married on February 8, 1987. Their union was blessed with two children.

A dedicated student, Vernon continued his education at St. Johns River Community College, where he majored in Business and achieved both his Associate's and Bachelor's degrees.

His commitment to service was evident in his 20-year tenure with the United States Navy, from which he retired honorably as a 1st Class Petty Officer.

Apart from his professional achievements, Vernon found joy in various hobbies. He was an avid baseball and football fan, and he was particularly fond of The Atlanta Falcons. He also enjoyed going to the movies, bowling, and playing pool.

Vernon was preceded in death by his dear wife, Carla Oates, parents: Virginia Lyons and Johnny Oates; bonus dad, Fletcher Lyons.

He leaves behind his two children: Vernon Jr. and Vernisha, both of Orange Park, FL; sisters: Cherry Ann, Fort Valley, GA; Shemika (Ricky), Lizella, GA; Charlotte (Pastor Hilliard); Macon, GA; brothers: Anthony (Joanna), Harrisburg, PA; Frederick (Zonda), Greensboro, NC; Ronald (La’Tonya), Kerry, Michael, all of Fort Valley, GA; Scott, Trion, GA; Gerald (Carol) Warner Robins, GA; father and mother-in-law, Freddie and Lucille, Fort Valley, GA; his beloved dogs: Leo and Kali; along with a host of aunts, uncles, sisters and brothers in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who will forever cherish his memory.

Vernon's life was a testament to dedication, love, and service. He will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him. May he rest in peace.
